Desiree Douglas: Studio Owner
Born in a cabin next to the beach in Lantzville, raised in Nanaimo and on Gabriola Island, Des is a true Nanaimoite and Nanaimo’s first home grown tattoo artist!
Des started her tattoo career back in 1996 under the mentorship of Local tattoo legend Zain Hull. She worked alongside him and his daughter for three years. From there Des went on to be one of the founding members of Tranceformations and was the only tattooer there for 3 years. She single handedly built the shop’s great reputation for tattoos before parting ways due to irreconcilable differences.
After working in different local shops and never quite happy with how they were run, she decided to branch out on her own and create a safe, welcoming, non-judgemental and inclusive environment for her clients and fellow tattoo artists alike.
Desire Tattoo studio is the result.
Des is a lover of local flora and fauna. In her spare time she enjoys outdoor adventures in the forest with her partner and familiar (cat), and tending to her herb and vegetable garden. She also has a penchant for fast cars and racing them at the track.
After 20 years of tattooing she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2017. While learning how her autoimmune disease works and how it affects her daily life, she spends her time keeping the business running like a well oiled machine and doing as much art as she is physically able to.
As per her neurologists request, Des took some well needed time away from tattooing but has since managed to do a few small tattoo sessions for clients with pieces that were started before her diagnosis.
Body permitting, Des plans to start taking on small tattoos again in 2020.
